MANDATE

Papirmasse is a magazine, work of art, and social experiment all rolled into one.
We want everyone to have art – real art. Not the fake paintings sold at department stores or the same tired old posters every college student has. No! We want images to travel, and people to get excited about seeing. Our eyes are beautiful things.

Paintings are expensive because they are one-of-a-kind. But prints can multiply.

Our mandate is to create a new generation of art collectors by making art accesible for all. This is art that comes to you, whoever and wherever you are.

We showcase the freshest work from over 40 artists and writers every year.  Don’t miss out.

WHAT YOU GET

A monthly art print of varying size with contemporary writing on the flipside.

We strive to publish a variety of styles in both art and writing: that means that over the course of a year you might receive graffiti-inspired portraits, landscapes, illustrations, and short stories, essays, graphic novel excerpts, and poems - to name just a few possibilities. Browse our past issues to get a sense of what we like – hopefully you will like some of it too.

Our format changes from month to month, meaning that each print is truly a surprise.
So far our prints have ranged from a 10-part 5″x7″ postcard series, to a 6” x 9” reversible book folded down from a single huge sheet of paper, to an 18” x 24” double-sided poster, and everything in between.

Subscriptions are sold by the year: $60 for 12 art prints in North America and $120 internationally (shipping included).

HOW IT’S PRONOUNCED

.

Pah / purr / mass

Papirmasse is a play on the Danish word for pulp, a sly reference to our preferred place in the trenches of popular culture (think pulp novel), and the paper we print on.

.

HOW IT WORKS

.

Papirmasse is able to offer art prints at such low prices in exchange for you helping us plan our print run by subscribing for a year.  Individual back issues can be purchased in the SHOP section of this site, but the real savings come for those who subscribe.  Don’t fret it you’re only finding out about us now: we offer packaged sets of back issue prints (grouped by year).  Look for ‘Folios’ in the SHOP or click here.

HISTORY

Papirmasse was founded in 2008 by Canadian artist Kirsten McCrea. In 2011 and 2012 it was produced with support from Maison Kasini. Realizing that few people are in a position to buy original artwork and that the reproductions offered in commercial stores are bland and banal, Papirmasse was born.  Appreciators of art who would like to own original and contemporary works: rejoice!  Here at Papirmasse, art is for everyone.
